Books for African Schools

In January and February 2012, the Edina Trust, in partnership with Mkuki Na Nyota Publishers, distributed 4,095 maths text books to 15 primary schools in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

The schools which received the maths books were selected with the help of a local NGO (Non-Governmental Organization). Each school received 52 sets of four maths books and two copies of the book for teachers (including answers).

Mkuki Na Nyota Publishers distributed the maths books to the schools for the Trust, and reported that "all 15 schools were ecstatic… we were touched by the reception and the desperate situation in the schools… thank you for making such a big difference in the teaching and learning of mathematics"

Did you know? Tanzanian primary schools include children aged 7 to 14?
Did you know? Children are taught in Kiswahili at primary school and in English in secondary school?
Did you know? The average pupil to teacher ratio at primary level is 56:1?

In 2002, the Tanzanian Government eliminated all primary school fees. This had lead to a big increase in the number of children attending school at the primary level, however there have been issues with overcrowded classrooms and a lack of resources. Children also have to pay for school uniform and make contributions to the running costs of the school.
