Derek has worked as a school improvement professional in Liverpool for more than 14 years. Prior to this he worked as the National Strategies Science Consultant for Manchester City Council after 7 years as a secondary science teacher with leadership roles at subject and whole school level.

Since becoming the science advisor for School Improvement Liverpool Derek has worked across all phases including early years and has provided science curriculum consultancy and support to primary schools across Liverpool, Knowsley and Wirral. He has also been seconded to Liverpool Hope University to lead the secondary chemistry PGCE.

Since 2020 Derek has worked as an independent primary science consultant providing science curriculum and pedagogy consultancy to primary schools across the North West region. He is also an Associate Facilitator for STEM Learning.

Derek is passionate about ensuring all children get the very best opportunities to learn science and understand what it means to get better at science.
